"Vatican paper criticises 'anti-Christmas' film 'Golden Compass'"
found not far from the following headline
"Golden Compass" Criticized for Removing Anti-Church Themes"
The movie, produced by the same company that produced the recent CS Lewis adapter Christian-friendly "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", is going to die the death it deserves. It has failed to satisfy the actual fans by watering down implications of the Magisterium, and failed to satisfy the Church, which had read the book instead of seeing the movie when it made its pronouncement.
If someone thought the book was worthy of turning into a movie, they should have done that. If it had elements that made it dicey to turn into a movie, that should have been decided before they tried to "improve" it. This film, as demonstrated in the headlines, won't make anyone happy and, consequently, won't return the investement to its makers, who really didn't deserve it anyway.
